Taking in Life Around Me....Sunday Stills...Theme: What's that Aroma?

This #sundaystills challenge is hosted by Terri from Second Wind LeisureI've also been loving visiting the blogs of the other participants and being inspired by their interpretations of the theme. Sometimes I'm a week late commenting but I do try to visit everyone. After all, if you take the time to produce something, you sure hope people visit.

This weeks theme is "What's that aroma?" Our #WQW theme was also "Smell". You can find my post here. Smell is so subjective right? What I think smells amazing, or gross, you might find it the opposite to be true. My hubby cannot stand the smell of lilacs...I love the smell.

The aroma of fresh coffee and coffee beans...so wonderful...unless you dislike coffee. I love it so the smell to me is wonderful.

In our small town there are some "aromas" that take some getting used to, and some I still can't stand. We have a dog food plant, and that smell definitely took some getting used to..we also have some farms and the smell of silage still makes me gag. A slaughterhouse is also in town, and that smell isn't very nice either. It is one smell that will get me to "jog" if we're on a walk in that area. Several miles away is a paper mill. That smell is interesting. At work, a block away there is a BBQ joint and we can often smell him smoking the meats...we can often smell the other restaurants and it makes our stomach growl.

What other aromas do I love...anything baking in the oven. Fresh coffee, a bouquet of flowers, fresh mowed lawn and the smell in the air when it rains after a dry spell. The smell of dirt, and fresh air. I actually like the smell of paint, glue and gasoline...lol.

I DO NOT like the smell of marijuana (I think it smells like a skunk), cigarette smoke, sulfur (in some areas here if water is not treated it has a strong sulfur smell..yuck). Rotten eggs, Skunk cabbage, and I'm sure there are more things. But let's not focus on those. I don't think anyone likes the smell of forest fires, though I do enjoy the smell of a bonfire.

On to some photos.

Oh, the one time I left eggs on the burner and went to the store..uhhh..that did NOT smell good. I remembered, called my MIL and she went up. Thankfully all there was, was a bit of smoke and a nasty smell....the smoke alarm was going off though.

The smell of a bonfire will always be a favorite.

The smell of wildfire, not so much. On the left, smoky skies and just to the right a normal sky. This was on a trip to Central Oregon in 2017. The smell of smoke permeated the air and was one of the first times I really paid attention to air quality.

Lily's of the valley remind me of my grandma! They have a subtle fragrance.

I love the smell of fall and fall leaves.

The fresh air at the ocean or in this case, the puget sound.

Nothing better than fresh bread in the oven or anything baking or cooking!

My lavender calendula salve had a wonderful light fragrance.

I love the smell of lilacs. My hubby, not so much.

Oregano and mint. YUM. When I pass a plant on a walk that I think is an herb, I always run my fingers through the leaves to get the scent.

With Joy Unquenchable,
Kirstin

  1. Such a wide variety of scents and smells, Kirstin! When we lived in Sacramento, my commute took me right by the Sunbeam Bread plant--OMG the baking bread scent permeated everything! If I had worked near there I would have weighed 300 pounds! I love your beach campfire shot! It reminds me of that smell of the sand and smoke (with a hint of hot dog) that you can only find at the beach! Thanks for including the gorgeous lilacs--I have a cutting from a neighbor's bush, and can't wait to see how they come out!

    1. Thanks Terri. Our dentist used to have bread baking in a bread machine. I used to tell them they were mean, because if I was going in for more than a cleaning it was torture to smell something so amazing knowing I couldn't eat for awhile.

  2. Oh I love the liliac smell and it never lasts long enough. Coffee on the other hand makes me nauesated and gives me a headache. I know that seems weird to most people but it's true. Coffee shops are not my favourite place to be because within 5 seconds I feel like crap. That's quite the story about forgetting the eggs and how it turned out!! My gramma forgot the pie in the oven once and jumped up at church, yelled "the pie" and left the church at full tilt! That was back in the days of wood stoves. Lucky she didn't burn the house down. 1. Such a bummer about the coffee...my hubby sometimes likes the smell of coffee but he can't stand the taste. lol. Oh my gosh, that is so funny about your gramma!! yah, we had a few years of a serious transition that had me very forgetful! Funny how my hubby had just started working for a disaster restoration company and I kept burning things on the stove. I told him I was just trying to make sure he stayed in business...he didn't find it funny.

  3. I love the smell of lilacs too and anything baking. I also love the smell of coffee, but I do not like drinking coffee at all. I enjoyed your post and your photos.
