#WQW.....Theme: Recipes and food

It's another week of  Writer's Quotes Wednesday, hosted by Marsha from Always Write. If you're interested in joining, you can find more about #WQWWC here

Every other month we're going to highlight one of our senses. A few weeks ago Marsha had Taste on the list but didn't get to it so she will be posting about taste this week... I chose to share quotes about Taste a few weeks ago on the normal schedule.

This week, I'm choosing  to expand a bit on that and go with quotes about recipes and food. Does anyone else love to read recipe books and magazines? I do, even if I'll never make anything from them. Haha! I love watching cooking shows, I love learning about various foods and where they come from. In 2019 when we visited Italy, I purchased a book called "Italy Dish by Dish: A comprehensive guide to eating in Italy. So fun to learn about the foods in various regions.
I don't like my handwriting, but I like receiving handwritten recipes. That seems to be a rarity these days and I know I'm guilty of just typing them out.
This cookbook was from one of the family reunions on my maternal grandmothers side of the family. Every reunion had a new recipe book. Some were serious and some were kind of funny, like this one for Barbecued Ice Cream.

Food is one of the ways I show my love for people...here, let me bake or cook you something. When somebody's birthday comes around, they get to choose their favorite meal and dessert. I love trying new recipes. I love finding ways to make some "unhealthy" meals, a bit more "healthy" or at least use better ingredients. I feel like recipes passed down for generations should be treasured. I believe in taking my time to savor the food I'm eating. I do believe that food should fuel us, but I also believe in moderation and having nothing being completely off limits. We should have a healthy relationship with food.

I enjoy experimenting with all styles of "food". There was a time when most people I knew ate the same things, but now, I have friends who are Vegan, Keto, dairy free, Gluten free...phew..We've tried them all. I wouldn't say I'm one or the other but I do dabble with it all and have no problem making meal from any of those, what would call them "diets?". It's expanded my palate and made me more creative in my cooking and baking.

Okay, enough babbling, let's get on with some quotes I found.

The photo with the above quote are members of my Bapa DiLuciano's family in one of their kitchens. I love it. I share it last week in my women in history WQW if you want to see it without the quote over it. I LOVE this quote, especially now that my mom, grandma and dad are gone...the ones I always talked to about cooking.

YES. I believe that food is totally this. A universal experience, something we can talk about with anyone. We might not agree on what we like or don't like, but there can be some awesome conversations around and about food.

This goes along with what I shared about moderation. For me it's about moderation and self control!

I told you, it's how I express my love to people....I give my heart when I cook for you. One of the young adult guys in my daughters church always comments when I post food on my IG....so sometimes, like tonight, I'll send her to youth group with something to give him. Tonight it was a piece of the peanut butter pound cake I made for her birthday. Ha!

I don't remember where I heard this quote. It might have been on Reluctant Entertainers blog, but it just resonated with me. Recipes passed down, as we marry, blending recipes from both families. My mother in law makes a Swiss cookie that is identical to the Italian version..we joke about the name...at her house it's called Bratzile, and at my house they're Pizzelles.
Ooops, shoot, there's a typo. Should say "soul" not "sould". I thought this was good. We are what makes a recipe come a live, have meaning and depth.

I believe gathering people around a table brings healing, brings connection, invites conversation, laughter and maybe tears. We have a table that we were given back in 2008 and I love it (though I'd love to sand it down and refinish it because some of the stain on top got damaged), what I love about it, is it has 3 leaves and extends to easily fit 10+ people. When we planned the new part of our home, we planned an island that is HUGE...it will seat 8 people around it, to gather to eat, play games, chat while I cook.

With Joy Unquenchable,
Kirstin

  1. Kirstin, what lovely quotes. I love what you did with your mother's kitchen picture - using it for a background for the quote. What a great way to use treasured old photographs! Your posts are always so loving and real. They are always a treasure to read, and this one is another in a long line of classics. When and if you ever put them together in a book, I want one of them. :)

  2. You've chosen some wonderful quotes. We always sit at the table for our meals. I think it's important. It’s where all the best conversations happens in our house!

    1. Thank you for visiting Gloria. I do agree that sitting around the table is powerful. For some reason we didn't do it alot when our girls were little, but wherever we sat, we engaged in conversation.
