Taking in Life Around Me....Sunday Stills: Feed the Birds

This #sundaystills challenge is hosted by Terri from Second Wind LeisureIt's a great themed photography challenge that you'll enjoy. I love seeing the other participants interpretation of the theme each week...it causes me to think outside the box. I joined in hopes of it pushing me to get out and take more photos...I have to some degree, but I also like that Terri is okay with us finding photos in our archives, which is also a lot of fun. So check out my photos and then head over to Terri's page to participate or visit other's posts. There are some awesome contributors who always inspire me.

This weeks theme is all things birds and "feeding" the birds. This theme repeatedly has me singing the song from Mary Poppins "feed the birds, tuppence a bag, tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag", though I always thought they were saying "toppins". AND it also has me thinking of the pigeon lady from Home Alone. Why? I have no idea!

Now, sadly I do not have any bird feeders at my house. My hubby equates bird feeders with bird poop all over the place. Sure, I could probably set some out in other parts of our property, but I haven't. I did have a hummingbird feeder, but I need a new one.

Last week, the grandkids and I made some bird feeders as a craft. We took TP rolls, spread them with natural peanut butter and then rolled them in bird seed. We hung them in various places. I've YET to see a single bird visit them. The birds that I see around our home are robins, thrush, Stellar Jays, and sometimes chickadees, or some other small bird, maybe a finch, I don't know. I'm sure our little craft isn't the sturdiest of things, but come on...ONE bird would have been nice!

My plan to catch some birds in action anywhere has not been successful. I would've taken a bird in a parking lot. On my walk today, there was a dead possum and I found myself thinking "well, now would be a good time for some big bird to come get dinner". I may make one more attempt at driving around before I publish this, otherwise I'll hit my archives. I just looked at my past posts of this theme and I'm not sure if I have any new ones in my archive. I don't like to always repeat photos. If I had time I would drive to our local wildlife refuge, but I'm not sure I can make that happen.

Update....I looked out the window this morning and the birds were eating the birdseed. I couldn't get the greatest pictures, but good enough. Plus I found some older photos (last year or so) that I haven't shared yet.

It's coming up to that time of year where the smelt run in the Columbia and Lewis river. It is an amazing thing to see the eagles, and last year the Pacific White Pelicans arrive to feast...as well as a few pesky sea lions. I can't wait. I'm tempted to rent a lens when I'm more sure of when they will come.

While in Hawaii last year there was no shortage of birds looking for handouts. From this rooster, to this unique looking cardinal. I was so surprised and excited to see that it was indeed a variety of cardinal.

These little guys sat right next to me begging for a piece of my Poi mochi donut from the Liliha Bakery. Sorry guys, not sharing any of our yummy goodies. We tried several things.

When hubby and were in Canada I spotted this heron in the bay.

This guys name is Romeo...he resides in the neighborhood where our airbnb was located on Vancouver Island..he'd come up looking for goodies. The story goes his mate died a few years ago and he just decided to stick around.

This guy kept flying down towards the water but never came up with anything.

Seagulls doing what seagulls do!

Making a fun bird feeder craft.

We did get some visitors, can you spy them in the trees.

The pictures aren't the best. I tried to get as close as I could. I think I need to start saving for a bigger lens. Haha!

With Joy Unquenchable,
