Tuesday Four....Happy New Year

New Year's Eve

It's time again for Tuesday 4 hosted by Anne from Cottage by the sea. Published each week in memory of Toni Taddeo, it's original author. We keep Toni Taddeo's original idea alive here with 4 questions each week to get you blogging, visiting and  learning about yourself and other bloggers.   The more people join in, the merrier and the better it gets. We are always looking for topics, subjects and ideas so feel free to chime in if you have idea.

I'm attempting to make a comeback. December is always a busy month at work and I just couldn't seem to get it together enough to post very often. Today we're talking about New Years, see Annies thoughts below. I'm sharing some photos of NY past

Growing up New Years Eve was one of my favorite times of the year.   Everyone would come to our home for snacks and drinks before heading out to parties.  And I do mean nearly everyone we knew.
All dressed up in formal clothing they would join in the fun.
My father would play ragtime on the piano, our German friends played German music and everyone would dance to it.
My mother made  hors d'oeuvres on tiny bread rounds and crackers... bayberry candles burned down for luck. Guy Lombardo was on the TV in the background.

1.What memories of New Years Eve do you have? I don't have many memories of New Years Eve from when I was little. When we were youth pastors and at our old church, we'd often put on an all church New Years Eve party which was always fun. Then years later, we'd be invited to another friends house to celebrate and that was fun as well. Food, games, prizes.

I had fun making these numbered cookies.

2. Do you go to bed early or stay up until midnight to ring in the new year? My hubby goes to bed early, I like to stay up and work on a puzzle and watch the ball drop. We don't go anywhere, and our girls are doing their own things. Sometimes I miss getting together with others, but I'm okay with how things are. After midnight we hear lots of fireworks so it's hard to fall asleep anyways.

At our friends house, the party was always a blast. Mostly kids and teens, but us parents had fun too.

3. Do you have special foods or customs for the New Year? Nope nothing special here...I know, we're kind of boring. We used to get together with a family that my hubby grew up with and the two family's got together every New Years Day to eat and play games. But as family's grew and life changes that tradition died out. Sometimes we go to my inlaws, but no special food. I had planned to make some ham and bean soup tomorrow.

I don't remember what we were doing here..it was either charades, Just Dance or something else.

4. Will football and New Year parades be on your agenda for New Years Day? I'm sure football will be on the agenda. Maybe I'll turn the parade on. I'd like to play some games.

The hostess always had fun props.

Whatever you do I hope you have a blessed, safe, happy and healthy New Year. Happy New Year!!

With Joy Unquenchable,
Kirstin

  1. It looks like a fun party that year! I will be staying in. We have fireworks that go off here too and scares my dog. They are not long lasting though like 4th of July. Loved your answers! Have a Happy New Year 2025!

  3. A very Happy New Year 2025 to your and your family. We're boring at my house too, lol. My family tradition growing up was to try to spend the time together and kiss and hug at the stroke of midnight. I only remember going out once to church service to ring in the New Year (my parents were not Christians at that time). We always had a big dinner on New Year's Day just like on Christmas Day. Nowadays the family is super small and spread out. I try to spend it with my brother to maintain the tradition of a hug and a kiss and well wishes. My DH didn't really have a tradition so I'm slowly introducing hi to a few here. He was home late and to sleep early due to work but we toasted with sparkling apple juice, hugged, kissed and greeted the NY. He had to rise early to work today so I'll be home taking down the decoration for another year. Enjoy the first day of the New Year.

  4. Happy New Year! The custom in our family is that the kids gets to decide the holiday foods. This year it was only my daughter and I, and we had steak and rice, with some sides, and pumpkin pie with ice-cream for dessert. We don't eat meat so often, it is a special treat.
