Taking in Life Around Me: Sunday Stills Theme: Feed the birds

This #sundaystills challenge is hosted by Terri from Second Wind LeisureIt's a great themed photography challenge that you'll enjoy. I love seeing the other participants interpretation of the theme each week...it causes me to think outside the box. I joined in hopes of it pushing me to get out and take more photos...I have to some degree, but I also like that Terri is okay with us finding photos in our archives, which is also a lot of fun. So check out my photos and then head over to Terri's page to participate or visit other's posts. There are some awesome contributors who always inspire me.

When I think of this theme I always think of the song from Mary Poppins, "feed the birds, toppens a bag..." or I'm reminded of the bird lady in Home Alone.

I don't have any bird feeders right now. I did have a hummingbird feeder but it broke so I need to buy a new one. I hate when there's bird poop all over the house and porch, so I need to get a few feeders that are a little further out in our yard, but still in places I can see and enjoy. We don't seem to have any spectacular looking birds around our house though. I wish this theme was next week as I'll be in Hawaii and I bet I'll see some really neat ones. That being said, I may not get a post up next week since I'll be gone. I actually remembered that I did have some photos I could use, and they are more recent ones.

Yesterday (Sunday) I went to a local lake with my daughter and a friend to walk since it was so nice out...in the PNW, in winter, if it's not raining and the sky is blue, and the sun is even remotely out, you go outside, no matter how cold and windy it is, and it was both. I didn't bring my camera (I should've), but I did spot a group of ducks and geese and grabbed a few quick (not so great) photos of the ducks eating. When I'm with others, I struggle to ask if we can pause so I can take a picture. I never want to inconvenience anyone, which really is wrong, because that means, I'm almost never going to share what "I want/need". Hmmm..

While in Mexico my daughters and hubby went snorkeling. The seagulls in the photos were having a hayday, because the boat captains would throw "food" out to bring the fish closer to the surface. Those birds weren't shy.

There were so many pelicans in the marina waiting for fishermen to come in and hopefully give them something.
Do you spy the birds sitting on the rocks?
Throughout the resort, all these little birds, among others, would come along and wait for some crumbs. I think this guy or gal is a warbler.
I think this guy might be an Oriole. He came around us at the pool.

During our snow/ice storm last month, I put some bread out for the birds and it was fun to watch them. I later read that bread isn't a great option for birds (sorry birds). I didn't have bird seed. I think I need to buy some just to keep on hand. Anyways, it was cute watching them enjoy it. Sorry for the poor photos. I was taking them through my windows which weren't the cleanest and have a screen on them.

With Joy Unquenchable,
Kirstin

  1. You managed to share some great bird feeding images, Kirstin! I laughed at you guys ducking under the water while the seagulls dive-bombed you during their feeding! So interesting to see the oriole and red warbler enjoying the tropical location. They do get around! I love seeing birds in our backyard--my zoom lens captures them well. I throw sunflower seed on the ground this time of year for the groundfeeders, then have a lovely sunflower surprise in the summer!

  2. Now you've given me a earworm - feed the birds, tuppence a bag - is on a loop in my head! Beautiful pictures, Kirstin. We have a bird feeder in our garden patch and it's always a joy to watch the birds and take pictures. Enjoy your trip to Hawaii - I'm sure you'll be back with some brilliant pics!
