Taking in Life Around Me.......#Sundaystills....Color challenge: Lava

This #sundaystills challenge is hosted by Terri from
Second Wind LeisureI've also been loving visiting the blogs of the other participants and being inspired by their interpretations of the theme. Sometimes I'm a week late commenting but I do try to visit everyone. After all, if you take the time to produce something, you sure hope people visit.

This weeks theme is a color challenge and the color is lava which could be black-brown, orange, black...I'll add even a bit of red. Now, I live in the PNW...we have several volcanoes but in the time I've been alive and lived here Mt. St. Helens was the only one that has erupted. The town I now live in is only an hour from the mountain and my hubby remembers walking to church when it blew. I lived at the time, 3 hours away from it. We got quite a bit of ash since the direction of the wind was NOT in our favor.

Isn't it funny that kids love to play like the ground is lava even though they don't even know where they get that idea from?

I'm actually gone on vacation for the next 10 days but had taken some photos to go with this theme and wanted to go ahead and join in so I'm scheduling it to post on Sunday. I decided not to bring my computer with me on vacation. I think that would be the longest without it....well, I do think I left it at home when we went to Europe. I don't remember. We'll see how I survive!

I felt like these little flowers fit the theme with their dark middles and slightly orange edges.

When Marsha, Terri and I were at Ft. Vancouver, their heritage garden was winding down but I found some lovely dark colored flowers. I don't know what any of them are called, but they are pretty.

One of our favorite places to go on vacation is central Oregon. There are many Obsidian "fields" for a lack of better words. Obsidian is an "igneous rock occurring as a natural glass formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes". Source: Britannica.com Around all of this obsidian is pumice which is "a volcanic rock that consists of highly vesicular rough-textured volcanic glass. Source: en.wikipedia.org

This photo is a bit blurry, but look at those layers.

This is called the Big Obsidian Flow in the Deschutes National Forest. All that rock is obsidian and pumice. It's pretty cool.

I loved this one because it looks like a heart! I wish I could've taken it home.

This sky kind of looks like what I envision lava as looking like. I bet Graham from Grahams Island blog will have some great photos.

How about an orange mug with flames in the background.

With Joy UNquenchable,
Kirstin

  2. We certainly had fun shooting color challenges together, Kirstin! You ended up with some gorgeous images! The whole west is one big volcano, I believe, still burping and belching. That must have been something for your hubby to witness when St Helen's blew. Hope your vacation is off to a great start.

    1. It totally was fun. I'm now back from vacation and kept my eye out for glass opportunities, and then kicked myself because there were a lot of halloween decorations out around houses...lol.

  3. Wow, Kirstin, you found some fantastic obsidian pictures. I love all your lava! The last obsidian rock reminds me of Darth Vader.

  4. Such a great take on the colour prompt Kirstin. That heart is the sort of thing I love finding too - so random! Love the orange mug :)

  6. Your photography just continues to get better and better, and more beautiful and more frameable. This post is a prime example.

How fun that you and Terri and Marsha all connected in real life lately. I know that was the best time. And can almost hear all the clicking of cameras that must have taken place the whole time you were together.

Funny, when I thought of lava and this Sunday Stills prompt, I thought only of red. Or maybe red and orange. Ha!! Tunnel vision. Love that you have included that dark, shiny Obsidian to represent the prompt. We visited a dormant volcano years ago and the area all around the base of the volcano was strewn with volcanic rock that was ... black!! And brown. Had just forgotten that.

Gorgeous sunset. Delicious hot drink in that orange cup with the fire pit in the background. But my favorite is the first photograph with those delicate flowers.

We are off on vacation the end of the month. Not sure whether I will pack up the laptop to take or not. But if I get back to blogging regularly again, would want to have it with me. I just CANNOT do the same things on my silly phone.

    Enjoy your time away!!

  7. Oh fabulous! I totally recognize those shots from the Big Obsidian Flow. I know most people think of lava as red but I have always thought of it as black. Probably my desert background lol. Great shots all, hope you had a marvelous holiday.
