#WQW........Theme: Memorial Day

It's another week of  Writer's Quotes Wednesday, hosted by Marsha from Always Write. If you're interested in joining, you can find more about #WQW here.

This weeks theme is Memorial Day, or Readers Choice, but as usual, I'm going with the assigned theme. A little late, but getting it done.

I know that for many this isn't a happy day. It's another day that reminds them of what or who they've lost. I have many family members who have been in the military. I'm thankful they all made it home alive. Others aren't so fortunate. With that being said, I always try to be sensitive to those around me, especially if I don't know where they are coming from or how they feel about this day.

I thought I'd look up some facts about the day that you might not know...or maybe you do.

1. Memorial Day was a response to the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War. (Mentalfloss.com)
2. It was originally known as Decoration Day...decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags.
3. James Garfield delivered a VERY long speech in 1868 lasting almost 2 hours.
4. Each year a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00pm local time. It's not clear where this originated.

Here are the quotes I found that really spoke to me. Ones that I really hadn't heard or read before.

I love this song by Justin Moore-The Ones That Didn't Make it Back Home.
Songs are powerful for me...I love listening to songs that resonate deeply with me. This one does.

We really never go away on Memorial Day....it's just too crowded and busy places. We'll stay home, do stuff around here. We're meeting friends for breakfast Monday morning to talk about our hopeful trip to the NE states in October. Maybe I'll do burgers on the grill or maybe we'll just have a fire in the firepit and do hot dogs.

 With Joy Unquenchable,
Kirstin

  1. I enjoyed your post very much. The song is a sad one, but beautiful. I remember my great-grandmother calling Memorial Day "Decoration Day." That's been a while back!

  2. What a wonderful video! I was doing okay dry-eyed until the part where his dog went and lay by the casket.
Funny, I didn't know about Writers Quotes Wednesday, but just ordered a glue stick to affix those verses/quotes -- even phrases -- that resonate in a little journal. Have a wonderful - and safe! - weekend!
