Tuesday Four......Meals Past and Present

It's time again for Tuesday 4 hosted by Anne from Cottage by the sea. Published each week in memory of Toni Taddeo, it's original author.

This week let's talk about food and menus past and present....

1. What was your favorite meal as a child? Oh boy. I'm not sure I can remember. I don't have a real great memory when it comes to details of growing up. I do remember really loving Kraft mac and cheese and a yummy PB and J on soft white bread. As a teen? Probably whatever my mom made, but I really loved when she made homemade rolls and BBQ ribs with corn on the cob. When I got my braces off my sophmore year, that was the meal I requested. I also loved beef stroganoff. As a young adult.....? As a young adult I was in college away from home for a few years but I did gain a love for Chimichangas at the local Mexican restaurant and still love it today. and what is it now? Again, that's hard because it just depends. I will never turn down pasta. I love stuffed shells or lasagna, so we'll go with that.

2. What did Mom make for breakfast? Don't remember when I was little....and I think when we were older, we were on our own to eat what we wanted. I loved cereal and grits. Lunch?  Again, not really sure. I either ate school lunches or packed a sandwich. Dinner? I remember dinners were more her thing. She'd always make a variety but kept it simple. She made things like burgers and ribs, but I also remember having spaghetti, Mexican biscuit pizza, gizzards and rice, liver and onions, enchilada Suizas, some type of tuna quiche and rice was the crust. Do you recall the menus? Not very well. Ugh. I wish I had a better memory or more conversations with my mom and both my parents are gone now so I can't really ask.

3. How was dinner time as a young newlywed? They were pretty relaxed. Plain.. fancy? I wouldn't say "plain" but more like simple. Nothing fancy.  Set the table of just catch as catch can? For whatever reason we have never been ones that ate at the table. Though looking back I wish we had done that more.   If you aren't married, how was dinner living on your own?  Do you invite people over or to go out to eat? I enjoy going out to eat, but I also love having people over.

4. Is it important for family to eat together at the table in the evening or for breakfast?  Why do you think so or not? I feel like it is whatever works for each family. We didn't often eat at the table, even after we had kids and it was fine, because we sat around and often watched Little House on the Prairie...which was fun, BUT I do wish we had taken more time around the table and developed more conversations.

Thanks for coming by and joining in.  You help make this more fun for everyone.

With Joy Unquenchable,
Kirstin

  1. Mexican biscuit pizza sounds interesting. My mom's recipe for stuffing includes chicken livers. My husband and I enjoy them. They are not as strong as regular livers. I enjoyed watching Little House. Things are so different now. Kids just want to be on their electronics. When my grands are over, I have to tell this no electronics at the dinner table. I tell them it is time to talk.

    1. It is definitely different times. I should see if I can find that recipe. I think it was basically biscuits spread on a pie pan, then topped with refried beans, taco meat, cheese, chopped tomatoe, etc. It was simple and good.

  2. I don't have great memories either. I blocked a lot of things out because of drama in the house. I'm glad I'm not alone in remembering things in some of those questions. Heck I don't even remember what my husband and I ate after we got married. Now we seem to eat while watching TV. I'd rather sit at the table. Enjoyed reading your answers.

    1. Sometimes I wonder if I have blocked out or suppressed memories because often things weren't great at our home. I used to say my. mom could make up anything about my life and I'd probably believe her. Sad, but true.

  3. I'm glad I'm not the only one. BOy, some peoples memories are amazing. Both my parents and grandparents have passed away and so I can't ask them.
