Taking in Life Around Me........#Sundaystills.....Feed the Birds

This weeks theme for #SundayStills is "Feed the Birds".  I'm so glad I found this challenge by Terrie from Second Wind Leisure. Find her current post here. I've also been loving visiting the blogs of the other participants and being inspired by their interpretations of the theme.

Friends, I love birds, yet, I hardly have any pictures of them. What is up with that? I scrounged through old photos and found some, and since we were snowed in last week I decided to try and put out some "food options" and see what I could come up with......Not much! They either didn't like my choices, were hiding because of the snow, are were in stealth mode and I never saw them. I got a few, but not the greatest photos...something to work on for sure.

"Feed the birds, Tuppence a bag, tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag"

We loved that song from Mary Poppins and the bird lady (though we sang it like "toppins). And remember the bird lady from Home Alone?

We have a family of hummingbirds that frequent our home year round. I've caught them a few times on my camera but man, it's hard.

Just about every year we have smelt that run in our rivers, where we live, the Columbia river meets the Lewis river. These were taken a few years ago when they ran heavy...the river was lined with hundreds of bald eagles just waiting for a meal. Sea lions also come up the river.
Not the greatest pictures because I couldn't find them on the computer so had to take them from my Facebook album. The eagle above has a fish.
When my daughter and I traveled to NYC in 2017 she had a list of places she wanted to see and one included the bridge from Home Alone where the bird lady was. That's it in the background, and look, pigeons.
Our local wildlife refuge is so pretty. You can drive and there are areas you can also get out and walk. This family of Canadian geese were so cute.
I've always loved Red Winged Blackbirds...I love their song.
This guy caught a meal and we were lucky enough to witness it.

When I visited my family in Florida a few years ago this family of cranes visited daily, several times a day. My uncle had a feeder and they weren't afraid of anyone. They were born nearby and my aunt and uncle and grandma watched them grow up. It was so neat.

While visiting Italy, I think my daughter became pigeon-phobic...lol, they were everywhere and expected something from everyone, they'd even dive bomb you. Oh I wish I had a photo of that. Note the pigeon on the stoop next to her?

The above photo and the remainder are ones I tried to capture last weekend during our snow. Not so great, but it was fun trying.

Almost forgot about our visit to the Fort Worth Zoo and all the birds there.

There are apparently several different types of Flamingos, we had wondered why some were darker and some lighter.

I can't wait to see the photos and interpretations everyone else took on this theme. Thank you Terrie for hosting and coming up with fun and challenging weekly themes.

Joy Unquenchable,
Kirstin

  1. That hummingbird photo is amazing! We don't get many exotic birds in our corner of the UK, but it's still nice looking out at the ones we have.

    1. Thank you. We don't either...unless we go to a zoo...lol. it would be cool to be in a place where that is their natural habitat. But maybe people in other places would like to see our more common ones...lol. I'd love to visit the UK sometime. I was born in England because my dad was in the air force, but just love all the photos and videos I see. I'm drawn to older biuldings and communities.

  2. These are great shots, Kristin! I was hoping to get a hummingbird shot for my #SundayStills post but no such luck. So I had definite HB Envy with your post. :D Like you, I can never wait to see the interpretations of others for this theme. It's been a pleasure to meet you through this challenge. I am now a regular follower!

    1. I know, right....those buggers are fast. I cheat and put my camera on sport mode....so i'm less likely to ruin a shot. It's been great meeting you too. I'm trying to get back into blogging. it's a great creative outlet for me.

  3. You have a beautiful collection of birds, Kirstin! The hummers are great and I love seeing your eagles in action (something I hope to capture with my own lens eventually)! I remember the Mary Poppins song Feed the Birds, so cool and thank you for that reminder. Yep, those pigeons are crazy. I think Tom Hanks dubbed them the "rats of birds" in one of his shows.

    1. Hahaha...."rats of birds" I think my daughter would agree. I'd love to see the eagles like this again, but haven't since that year. Mostly because I don't think the run has been that big, and I just haven't taken the time to drive to the river to look.

  4. A great collection of photos Kirstin and I also thought of Mary Poppins and the song when I saw this week's prompt. I don't think we have hummingbirds where I live but they are so cute! Have a great week and look forward to next week's #SundayStills.

    1. Fun song. Hummingbirds are awesome. So fast, they're hard to capture and they don't sit still for long. Supposedly their nests and eggs are super tiny.

  5. Fabulous collection of birds Kirstin, I love the hummingbirds as we don't have them here in Aus. When I was working I was nicknamed a 'hummingbird on speed' due to the pace I walked and did things, so I love seeing the birds I was named after :) I always enjoy seeing everyone's interpretations for #SundayStills as they are so interesting!

    1. I agree, everyones interpretations are so fun. Of course I love their stories as well. How funny to be nicknamed "hummingbird" though you don't have them. They are fun to watch.

  7. I agree, hummingbirds are so hard to catch in a photo. Our cat had more luck catching them than I did. And we had tons of them, but I'm too slow. You have to be at the right place at the right time to get bird pictures. That's why I love landscapes. It pretty much holds still for you. Your Ft. Worth pictures show what a huge variety of birds they have there. It's almost bird overload when you go to the zoo, isn't it. That's what happened to me in the zoo in Australia. Too many. I took lots of pictures, but they started looking all the same to me. Thanks for the fun display. :)
