Thursday Tips: Creating a SenseSational Home

Coffee with Me Thursday Tips
I thought I'd join in at Coffee with Me's Thursday Tips. I would have gotten it up sooner but I had errands to run today. Better late than never.

Several years ago I was in charge of putting together our M.O.P.s Newsletter (which I loved doing). A few weeks ago when I was going through all of my files and organizing I came across several of them. It has been so fun going back through and reading what I put inside each issue.

I found a series I had done on Creating a SenseSational Home. I think I got the ideas from Terry Willit's book Creating a SenseSational Home . Ya think? I just found it on Amazon and I think I'm going to buy it. You see, we can create an atmosphere in our home that appeals to all of our senses. That is what I want my family to experience, and what I want my guests to experience. We have recently (a year and a half ago), moved into a new home and I know that there are ways I can make it more Sense appealing.

Over the next few weeks, I'll share some of the tips I had put in the newsletter. Hopefully you'll find something that you can use.

This week we'll start off with something pretty basic. I know that there are many women out there who feel like in order to have a SenseSational Home, or a home they can entertain in, they must have a home that is large and beautiful, filled with lots of "things". That just simply is not true. A home can be a dorm room, an apartment, a trailer or a mansion. It is what you make it that truly makes it a home. I have been in beautiful houses, that were not "homey". When I was in Bible College I made my dorm room as cozy and comfortable as possible. That was my "home" for two years.

Begin Creating a SenseSational Home by:

1. Being Thankful:
  • We need to be thankful for where we are right now (in terms of a home). We need to get beyond the "I don't haves" and the "if only I had" ways of thinking. No matter what we live in, that is our space to make "home" for everyone who enters the doors.
  • We may not be in our "dream" home, but we do have a home and making it a haven starts with a thankful heart.
  • Take a step back and look at your surroundings. If there is "no" money, than be creative in how to "redo", or "reuse" some things you may already have. How about swapping things with friends. Hit garage sales, goodwill, or a store like Ross or Homegoods. Today I got a cookie jar at Home Goods for 4.99.
  • Are you grateful for what you do have, and are you making the most of it while you are there.
2. Being Content:
  • Once you're thankful for where you are, make the conscious decision to be content there for this season.
  • A contented person is satisfied--that doesn't mean you don't still have hopes and dreams for what you'd like your home to be someday, it just means that you will enjoy where you are at this time.
I have lived in a dorm room with brick walls, my parents home, a studio apartment, a bigger apartment (but not nicer), a single wide trailer, a ranch style home, with an older widow for 2 1/2 years while we built our current home, and now our current home that is actually phase 1 of 2. Wow! Lots of places to make home and lots of places to learn to be content and thankful!

How about you! Are you ready to create a home that is Sense Appealing?

  2. Thanks Sandy. I have really enjoyed going through the old MOPS newsletters I found. As I read them I thought...wow, I do know how to write...it just needs to refreshed (C:

Thankful and Content are two of the toughest things for women (especially because we're so good at comparing ourselves), that if we can just get over that, then we're off to a great start! I have really had to learn this over the years as I entered the homes of certain friends, especially when their homes were how I envisioned my home decorated.

  4. Great post!!! I think I read or probably browsed that book at one time. I can't wait to hear more! I agree totally with you. We lived in a little house before this one, and I still felt it was cozy. I'm very content with my home and love having people over. I hope it shows. :)

Thanks for linking with Thursday Tips!!
