Kitchen Tip Tuesday: Recipe for Cinnamon Rolls

Today I thought I'd share a tip for some yummy, moist cinnamon rolls and a frosting that is comparable to Cinna-bons frosting. We are in the process of building our home. The second phase which will include the "real" kitchen is a few years out, but I would love to hear what you love most about your kitchen/pantry. For example, what do you love about your kitchen island if you have one, etc.. what would you do differently. What extras do you have that make the kitchen easier to work in.

(Printable Recipe)

Yummy Cinnamon Rolls
1 to 2 pkgs. yeast
1/4 c. warm (110 deg.) water
2 c. scalded milk
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 tsp. salt
2 eggs beaten
3 c. flour
4 to 4 1/2 c. flour
1 stick butter
1c. brown sugar
2 Tbs. cinnamon
Mix yeast and water. Set aside. Place sugar, shortening and salt in large bowl. Add milk and mix well. Add 3 cups sifted flour; mix well. Add eggs. Mix. Put in dissolved yeast, If lukewarm. Mix all very well. With remaining flour, spoon 1 cup at a time, slowly mixing thoroughly before adding next cupful. When too thick, dump out on to floured surface and with remaining flour knead in as much as possible. After you have a ball of smooth, elastic dough. Brush with crisco and let rise 10 minutes. Roll out dough. Spread softened butter over surface. sprinkle with brown sugar/cinnamon mixture.. Roll into a long loaf. Cut in 3/4 inch sections. Placed in a greased roasting pan. Brush tops with crisco and let rise till plump. Bake at 375 for 25 minutes.
Frosting
8 Tbs. stick of butter
1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
1/4 c. cream cheese
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Combine all ingredients. Mix till well blended. I let individuals put their own frosting on.
KITCHEN TIP: A tip I just thought of as I was typing this recipe: To speed up rising time, I preheat my oven to about 200 degrees, then turn it off. (I never seem to have a warm enough spot in my house)When my recipe calls for something to rise I cover the bowl or pan with a cloth and place it in the warm oven, this cuts the rising time in half. Just make sure oven is off, and you remove the cloth before turning the oven on.

  1. I just love the island in our kitchen. So handy when you’re baking. We have two pull out shelves. It looks like a regular cabinet, but the shelves are on rollers and pull out so you can get to what is in the back easier. I use my waffle iron more since I don’t have to stand on my head and dig to reach it. I would love to have two more. DeDe

  2. Be careful your kitchen island doesn't become a dumping ground...I have that problem from time to time!! I wish mine was multi level...one for work space and a taller level maybe for displaying some decorative chotchkies....

  5. These rolls sound sooo good.

I will have to try them.

I also turn my oven on and then when I stick in the dough - I turn it off. We have an old farm house - and it seems there is always a draft - and in the winter it never rises quite right without the extra warmth.

    Good Luck on your house.

The thing I do not like about my kitchen is that the cabnents are too low - make sure that you can fit appliances under the highth of the cabnent. I know you wanted somethign that I liked - but I thought this would help too. :)

    Blessings,

  6. Jane, thank you for your tip. I actually appreciate also what people would change about their kitchens or other rooms, like laundry rooms. It helps to know what not to do or what to do.
It is fun designing a house, but tricky to make sure you are covering all the bases...enough outlets, what kind of shelves, etc...

  7. We are remodelling our kitchen next year so these questions are on my mind too.

I think my biggest priorities are lots of bench space and a nice, big oven. Also, a big pantry is a great asset.

  8. I want a double oven, since we do a lot of entertaining. And yes a big pantry. An island where there's lots of room for baking, etc..and people to sit around and visit, or to have "buffet" style meals.

  9. My one advice for the kitchen is to not get tile counters or granite counters that have grout. It's a real pain to keep the grout clean and you cannot roll things out straight on the countertop. I would either fork over the $$ for slab granite or go with a cheaper composite material.

A previous commenter also said that she wished her island as 2-tiered, as do I. It'd be nice to have a raised "breakfast bar" that is a foot or two wide and then the rest of the island. On the wall leading up to the breakfast bar, put outlets. We only have one set of outlets on a very inconvenient location on our island and I really wish we had more and in a better spot!

  10. Hi Kristin,

Thanks for stopping by my blog and I have bookmarked your frosting so I can try on my next batch of cinnamon rolls. Looks sinfully good! :)

I'll email you about white whole wheat vs. wheat.
