Recipe: Homemade BBQ Sauce
There is just nothing like homemade BBQ sauce. I have yet to find a bottled sauce that I just absolutely love...though I'm open to suggestions. My mom always made her own and I guess making it myself always reminds me of her. The beauty of it is that you can really add anything you want to it. The sodium content will probably be much less and you won't find alot of extra garbage in there.
Here is the simple base: Everything is eye-balled and to taste, so no real measurements.
a few tablespoons butter
minced onion and garlic
Saute these items till tender.
Add:
Ketchup (about 1 cup)
Mustard..yellow or whatever you want (about 1/2-1 tbs.)
Brown Sugar (about 2-4 tbs)
To this I might add any or all the following:
Honey
Worcestershire sauce
molasses
molasses
a little vinegar (reg. or balsalmic)
liquid smoke
cooking wine
Whatever you're in the mood for, go ahead and throw it in. This is one of those recipes that you just add and taste, add and taste. I always make it and forget to take pictures. Sorry. I heat it all to just under a boil and let it simmer for awhile to let the flavors work in. Yummy. I love this so much I could just eat it off the spoon. Now go BBQ.
With Joy UNquenchable,
BBQ sauce is much better in the part of the contry that is famous for BBQ. I agreed, I could not find a store bought sauce I liked until I tried some in the OK, TX, and MO areas. The NW is not known for BBQ. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments on my blog. I love finding out that there are so many moms out there just like me.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of homemade BBQ sauce. I will definitely give it a try. I have a thing against onions, but everything else sounds good. :-)
Oh yum! I've never made my own BBQ sauce but I think it is time.
