Kitchen Tip Tuesday: Homemade seasoning mixes & Labelwatch

I know that it is not expensive to buy the seasoning packets at the grocery store..you know, taco seasoning, gravy mix, stirfry seasoning, etc..and they are pretty convenient. I buy them often, but I've decided to try and make them myself.
There are so many websites out there that show you how. The main reason to do this is that I want to control what my family consumes. By making my own stirfry seasoning, I can control the ingredients and the amounts that go into what I cook. I've done this recently with stirfry and sloppy joes. The results were wonderful. I didn't measure specifics, but added according to what I thought would taste good and what we like. I also looked at different websites to see what others put in theirs. I plan to make batches of seasoning mixes so all I need to do is pull out my jar and it's ready to go. I'm sure now and then I'll grab a packet, but hope to more often than not make it from scratch.
In my Stirfry mix I put: 1/4c. water, cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, sugar, soy sauce and crushed garlic...you could also add ginger. I left out salt because there's plenty in the soy sauce.
In my Sloppy Joe mix I put: 1 can tomato sauce, some organic ketchup, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, paprika, pepper and a touch of salt.
A site I like that lists ingredients and whether they are beneficial (promote health), cautionary (appear to be problematic) or OK (appear to be safe), is labelwatch. If an ingredient is highlighted in a particular color that alerts you to its benefits or cautions. You can then click on the ingredient and it will give you information on it. Granted, some of the ingredients you still may try to avoid, but especially those ingredients that are hard to pronounce and we have no idea what they are...this targets those!!!

  2. Thanks for the labelwatch tip. They do sneak some questionable ingredients into those mixes!
